Meet Your Guides

Frank Swaggerty

Hello!
I grew up hiking, camping, and practicing primitive wilderness survival. My very first job was being a "Sherpa" for an exotic orchid hunter in the everglades! When it was time to get a "real job", I joined the U.S. Coast Guard. I spent a couple of years right here in N.C. doing Search and Rescue and Law Enforcement along the Hatteras area. I transferred to the Great Lakes where I completed my Fire Fighting certification and was the lead Navigator on my ship. When I left the service, I took up Kart racing and Skydiving, but my love for backpacking never left.
A few years ago, we started the SB6K and that's when I fell in love with this area. We made several trips to the mountains to backpack and then returned home to Florida. It was expensive, stressful, and took a lot of work to be ready to hike right off the plane. That's where the inspiration for Asheville Guides and Gear came from.
We decided to move to this beautiful area to hike and backpack as much as possible. Our goal is to share our love for this place, help relieve some of the stress, and handle the logistics of getting others into the wilderness and enjoying the beauty of our area. We hope to see you soon!

Hi there! I'm glad you're here. For so many years my family had vacationed in this area, and I've always been drawn back. These mountains are home to me. I found out as a young adult that my family had settled here during the revolutionary war (and moved away during the industrial revolution). I somehow think that it's been calling me home all this time. These are our mountains, and I'd like to share them with you. I've been hiking here since I was a kid. I haven't seen everything yet, but I've seen enough to know that this is where I want to spend the rest of my days. I will say the hikes aren't always easy, but they are always worth it. It's what some like to refer to as secondary fun. A little about me.... by day I work in the Insurance Industry and have for 20 plus years. I work remotely out of Charlotte and visit there a few times a year. I was born and raised in northeast Florida on a farm. My family is still there, and I see them as often as possible. Frank and I have two very unmotivated, somewhat elderly dachshunds that hold down the fort while we wander the woods. They come with us from time to time, but only on short hikes, that we can carry them on. They love the woods; maybe not as much as we do though. I am looking forward to this little side gig. We've taken many friends out on hikes, and they all suggested we make a business of it. This isn't our full time job, as much as we'd like it to be. Maybe one day right? Hope to see you soon!
